For Every 100 people...

  • 68 do not have regular physical activity

  • 59 are overweight or obese

  • 34 have high cholesterol

  • 26 have high blood pressure

  • 25 smoke 17 binge drink

  • 10 have depression

  • 9 have diabetes

  • 8 have had a heart attack or a stroke

  • 6 are chronic drinkers

How many of each of these do you have in every 100 members of your employee population, and how much are they costing your health plan?

US health care costs continue in an upward spiral, with no end in sight. In 2005, employer premium costs increased 9.2%, nearly three times the rate of inflation, with the average annual cost for coverage for a family of four topping $11,000. These 2005 costs put health care spending more than 4 times that of national defense spending. The cost increases for health care in 2007 are expected to exceed 11%, again pushing medical inflation rates back into double digits.*

Attempting to defray the tremendous cost of providing employee health coverage, employers have shifted costs to employees and scaled back coverage. Average employee contribution to premium has increased 143% since 2000, while employee out of pocket expenses have increased 115% during the same time period.* Even with these extreme increases and changes, costs continue to climb causing employee dissatisfaction and a strain on employee relations and human resources departments.

Working with employer clients to establish and operate worksite health clinics typically staffed by Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants, HealthSTAT delivers on health plan cost decreases. This innovative program focuses on managing chronic health risks and conditions present within an employee population. Using a thorough health risk assessment process, HealthSTAT identifies the employees at risk. Results and recommendations are provided to each individual employee, and also to the clinic practitioner. This allows the practitioner to focus effort on the employees most at risk, while at the same time, provide episodic care for conditions such as sinus infections, flu, muscle strains, allergy injections, routine labs, care coordination, prescriptions, and referrals for other necessary health care services. Aggregate health risk information is provided to the employer in a de-identified, HIPAA-compliant manner for use in developing overall wellness initiatives to meet the needs of the employee population. Employees generally pay nothing to use the HealthSTAT clinic; the cost is typically funded by the employer. The clinic practitioner is trained on the employer’s specific health benefit plan so that all referrals for services outside the clinic are made within the proper provider networks.
